Wedding Photography Insights from Brisbane Photographer Cloud Catcher Studio

Your wedding photos are one of the most important elements of your wedding day.

They capture the most special moments of your big day and will determine how you remember the details of your wedding for the rest of your life. That’s why we believe it is so important to choose the right photographer for your wedding that suits your style and personality. To help you plan your wedding photography we spoke to Alyce from Cloud Catcher Studio who has shared her love of wedding photography and a couple of tips to help you and your fiancĂ© plan your wedding photography.

I have to be honest, Alyce is one of the most beautiful, fun, gifted wedding photographers out there. She has an incredible skill for making people feel comfortable behind the camera and capturing the special moments. It was an honour to work with her for our Palm Spring Photoshoot and we know from experience working with Alyce ourselves that she is VERY good at what she does and is not afraid to have a bit of fun along the way. We hope you enjoy getting to know her as much as we have!

How/why did you get started as a wedding photographer?

I studied a degree in film production, and then began my movie making career including assisting on wedding films – really old school cheesy ones that made me cringe. When the local film industry collapsed, I went back to uni to study a Masters in creative advertising, and took photography as an elective. I always resisted photographing weddings because I thought I’d have to pose people, and I hated the look of posed photos. A friend asked me to do an engagement shoot for her – I was so nervous but I decided to approach it in my own way – really natural, fun, happy photos and no posing. Loading those photos onto my computer that night I was in tears because I just knew this was what I wanted to do with my life.

What do you love about what you do?

I am super motivated by delighting our couples with their photos – showing them how beautiful they are, how loved they are, and giving them visual representations of their most treasured memories of their wedding day.

What inspires you?

Other visual arts – film and art mostly. Just watching different qualities of light as well. Light changes constantly and I get lots of ideas just watching the light!

What is your photography style?

I’d say candid, natural, relaxed – all that real good stuff! Posed photos make me feel really uncomfortable so I keep things light and fun for my couples so they are focused on each other and aren’t staring awkwardly at my camera.

What would be a tip for couples looking for a wedding photographer?

Make sure you LOVE their style and what they’re all about. There shouldn’t be any compromises here, you should be able to have total trust in your photographer and their creative process.

What is one thing you’d like all brides to know before their wedding?

As a bride and as a wedding photographer, I’ve been on both sides. Wedding days are wild beasts that can’t be tamed! On the day, no matter what happens, you just have to roll with it. It will be perfect (or perfectly imperfect) because it is your one wedding day. If you’re willing to just let the day carry you from start to finish, you will be able to enjoy every minute without focusing on the things that don’t go quite to plan.

What are your favourite images you’ve taken and why?

This is a tough one so I’m going to limit myself to a few of the weddings I’ve shot in the past month or so!

Sam & Trent

Sam and Trent had just got married, we charged up this hill for their portraits and suddenly they were alone for the first time on their wedding day and able to have that ‘omg we did it!’ moment. Trent picked Sammy up and gave her this massive hug. I love the movement in her dress, the mood and the two little macadamia leaves flying off the bottom of her skirt!

Jess & Karn

Jess and Karn’s confetti shot is just so perfectly ‘them’. These two are sunshine personified and this shot is so typical of the joy and excitement they radiated all day, Karn was in a flood of tears watching beautiful Jess walk down the aisle and from then on the two of them could not stop smiling and laughing together.

Paola & Tim

Paola is Colombian, Tim is Aussie, and Paola’s parents had made the trip to Brisbane for the wedding but didn’t speak english. This is the moment Tim began his speech in Spanish – Paola had no idea Tim was going to do this, and it meant the absolute world to her and to all of the Spanish-speaking guests. He didn’t get the translation totally perfect (according to the giggles from the crowd in places) but Paola was so touched by this gesture and there were many tears!

Molly & Josh

I adore this image of Molly and Josh. They got married in the Byron Bay hills, and I got them to just go for a wander in a paddock and hang out and be all married and stuff. I think this shot is so romantic, the two of them totally caught up in the moment, the windswept movement in Molly’s gown, nothing scripted or posed – just a guy and a girl crazy in love in a cow paddock. This is bliss!

What are you looking forward to most at the moment?

We have so many really beautiful weddings through December including one for two very dear friends of mine that has been such a long time coming – I can’t believe it’s almost here and I don’t know if there is enough waterproof mascara in this world for me on their wedding day. We are definitely finishing this incredible year with a bang – and then maybe a solid month of afternoon naps in January to recover.

We are so grateful for Alyce and the unique style that she brings to wedding photography. If you would like to get in touch with Alyce about having her as your wedding photographer check out the Cloud Catcher Studio website here.
